Sonoma County Children's Charities
The WCC
The mission of the WCC Charitable Foundation (WCC) is to benefit children in life-threatening circumstances. In 2001, WCC announced a partnership with Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa to build the WCC House in Santa Rosa. The WCC House will provide
a nurturing home for families with hospitalized children in a neo-natal or pediatric intensive care unit at Sonoma County hospitals. Conversion of a modular house on the Sutter Medical Center's campus was completed in October 2004. This building currently serves as housing for two indigent families at a time. This temporary residence will serve the Community until the permanent WCC House is built. Funds donated by the Sonoma County Children's Charities to the WCC Charitable Foundation will be placed in the Endowment Fund of the WCC House.
Valley of The Moon
The Valley of the Moon Children's Foundation is a private, nonprofit Organization established to provide supportive and educational services for the abandoned, neglected and abused children of Sonoma County. Several years ago, the Foundation formed a private public partnership with the County to raise funds to build a desperately needed new home for the children. To date, in excess of $9.0 million has been raised and construction is underway for the new housing units
including dining and kitchen facilities. Completion of this phase is scheduled for March 2005. Efforts continue to raise additional funds for the final Phase of the project including the Redwood Children's Center for sexually abused children and medical facilities is planned for construction beginning in mid 2005. At that time, the Foundation will turn its attention to expanded support services for the children, focusing on four key areas: 1) continued supplemental support in the home, 2) support of emancipated children, including education, housing and employment guidance, 3) support of children in foster care and foster parents and 4) community child abuse prevention.
Sonoma Academy
Sonoma Academy was founded to provide a premier, independent college-preparatory education for high school students in Sonoma County. At the outset, members of the board designated generous gifts to create a permanent scholarship endowment fund.
Their goal, to assure a strong socioeconomic mix in the student body, was achieved with the inaugural class of 45 freshmen and sophomores. Half came from private schools, half from public, one in five is a person of color, and nearly half
were awarded scholarship funds. As we double the student body for each of the next two years, additional funds are needed to ensure that the school remains accessible for all students.
Giving a talented young person a solid start in life is one of the most rewarding and lasting of legacies. That is why funds donated to Sonoma Academy by the Sonoma County Children's Charities will be used to provide need-based scholarship funds for students in the County.
Windsor Boys and Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Club of Windsor provides daily programs and activities aimed at keeping young people away from the harmful elements of our society. Our mission is to provide a fun, safe, supervised environment for all children where they are inspired to develop the qualities necessary to become responsible, caring citizens and leaders. Rather than returning to empty homes after school, Club kids find responsible, caring adults available to help them in every department of our
clubhouse. These familiar faces are more than staff members to the children; they become inspirational mentors and dependable friends. By giving children a supportive environment we can help them blossom into healthy, productive adults. The Windsor Boys & Girls Club is "The Positive
Place for Kids."
